Irrigation is one of the most important means for food and fodder in India. Earlier, when dry farming was the only means of food production and sustenance, the farmers depended on the vagaries of nature for their survival. In this undulating landscape, Indian government introduced "Lift Irrigation Scheme". The importance of "Lift Irrigation Schemes" is unique and distinctive. In such schemes, many farmers can come together and implement the scheme on private or co-operative basis. The capital costs for construction of such schemes are usually funded by the Government or by international donors. To carry water by means of pumps from the source and to distribute the water to the fields by means of suitable and proper distribution system are the two main parts of large lift irrigation schemes. In "Irrigation Schedule System", the water is supplied to all the blocks at the same time.
During the last three-and-a-half decades, the Andhra Pradesh Government has constructed 1,068 Lift Irrigation Schemes (LIS).
